Gifts from the Kitchen (idea #4) Face Plates-1

Some time back I saw  these plates and just LOVED the idea.

Then I have noticed several posts on Pinterst of people making their own. So I thought I would give it a try. And these were SO EASY and my son thinks they are about the coolest thing. He wants to have some of his friend over during Christmas Break to make some.

All of the sites I saw said they used the china paint pen listed at the bottom of the post. BUT when I was wanting to do these, Amazon was sold out and NO craft store carries them. But the ladies ad craft store number 3 said that regular paint pens (non toxic versions) would work  so I came home with several colors.

So all you need are white plates, we got ours at the Dollar tree for $1 each, and the pens the 6 pack I got was $5.99.

Make sure your plates are CLEAN & DRY then go to town making your faces. The paint does dry quickly so you kinda Have to work fast and DO NOT go back and try to “fix” something once it has tried. I tried that and the paint did not stick after washing on that spot.

Once you have them all drawn, put the in the oven at 250 degrees for 30 minutes. Once they are completely cooled you will want to wash before using.

THEN HAVE FUN PLAYING WITH YOUR FOOD. I have washed these in the dishwasher several times and they still look great, I would normally try to hand wash for longer use but wanted to see it they would hold up to the dishwasher before I shared them with you.

TIPS:

  • Work quickly
  • don’t try to fix a mistake once the paint starts to dry (the paint does not set well and will chip)
  • the plates with just the eyes, nose, and mouth are easiest to make and to put food on
  • my son likes the one with the hair and his name the best
  • while I have put these in the dishwasher I recommend hand washing for longer lasting plates
