My daughter is obsessed with tutus! She is sleeping in one as I type this. She thinks a tutu completes any and all outfits! Here birthday is just around the corner so I am making these for all of the little girls for party favors!
I had a good friend show me how to make them about a year ago and was shocked at how easy and quick they are to make. When I say quick I mean like 15-20 minutes. I use to always make them around ribbon so I could just tie the ribbon on here and have a big bow on it. Then I tried this way and it is even easier!
This is the same type of material as the headbands that are really popular. I wasn’t sure how to not make this material fray at the end so I took a lighter to each end until it melted a little. If you have a better or safer method go for it but that was just what came to mind. p.s. I am not responsible for any damages if you use a lighter 🙂
I have found if you take a piece of a box that is the length that you want the tutu it is much faster. So I cut this piece of cardboard off of an amazon box we got the other day. It was the perfect length. You start wrapping the tulle around the piece over and over.
Then cut through the tulle at ONLY one end of the piece of cardboard. This should leave you with pieces that are twice the length you want the tutu.
You are going to fold them in half over your finger like this. Make sure each side is even.
Then slide the top part (portion on finger) through a hole in the material that is going to be the waistband. Since I will be making 10+ tutus I did every other hole and they still looked really cute!
Sorry this picture is hard to see what I am doing because of the color of the tulle. You are going to pull the top loop (portion that was on finger) down some, you need enough room to grab the two tails (long pieces) of tulle and fold them through.
Once you have flipped the tails through then you just gently pull it tight.
Once you have went all the way around the tutu then you just stitch the sides together or you could probably put some ribbon through the holes going up and down and lace or tie the sides together.
Another way to make tutus is using ribbon or a long piece of tulle for the waist. I cut a piece of ribbon/tulle just like I did the headband material for the waist and then you cut the tulle the same as you do above for the length. You do not have any holes to knot through so you knot the tulle over the ribbon like you do in the steps above. Hope that makes sense. If not, let me know and I can take pictures.
You can mix colors of tulle. This was one I made her for a super cute Christmas shirt and tights that she had last year. She didn’t have a skirt to match and a tutu was perfect for it. Needless to say it looked better a year ago but this is what it looks like tonight. The tulle was tied on red satin ribbon.
This one is tied on red satin ribbon as well for her 2nd birthday party. The colors are hot pink and red since she was having a hot pink and red Elmo birthday party. I cut the red pieces of tulle shorter and knotted some of them together. So when I looped over my finger I looped the pink and red at the same time and knotted them through at the same time. I did it on every third piece (I think, that has been a year ago).
This is an adorable UK tutu our cousin and aunt got her for Christmas last year and she has a super flashy hair bow to match. Love it!
